Donating well
|
Look, being an academic isn't exactly the most lucrative of careers. And yet, I live in one of the richest countries in the world, make a decent salary, and have few expenses beyond just me, my partner, my cat, and my garden. When I first considered trying to donate some of my money and time, I had no idea where to start. If you're here and want some suggestions of good places to send your extra cash, read on! And remember -- if you can't donate money, you can certainly donate your time. You can start with your local food pantry, conservation groups, or schools for ideas on how to best donate your time. Groups supporting Indigenous peoples and cultures I'd encourage you to do some searching on your own to find meaningful groups to donate to, especially those that are local to you. Here are some groups that I either regularly donate to, or have donated to in the past (in no particular order): International Relief Efforts We can't ignore the immense human rights violations happening in Palestine, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, and many other places around the world. A lot of relief efforts are sparked through individual donations via Paypal, Venmo, and other means and through social media campaigns, so I usually look for targeted efforts through Instagram, Threads, and my own personal networks. Nevertheless, there are some outstanding international relief organizations that have been instrumental in preserving human lives and dignity. Efforts supporting LGBTQIAP2S+ individuals Queer kids, and especially trans kids, are at high risk of abuse, abandonment, suicide, depression, and other mental and physical health threats.
Scientific resources I use a lot of resources in my science, and I like to give back. Online educators There are a lot of people who have done great work that I've appreciated learning from in the past. I'm sure you have those people too -- online educators or podcasters who put in hard work to create great material. You should support them, either by donating directly, subscribing to their Patreon, or buying their books! Here's my list:
